Abstract

French poetic realism film in 1930s came into being under the influence of German Straβenspiel film movement, and had an influences on other countries' film-makers and artists. Pépé le Moko(1937) made by Julien Duvivier who was one of outstanding French film directors is a famous French poetic realism film. The film was released as the changed name, Homesickness to Korean people in 1939 and re-released in 1955 at Seoul. It's nihilistic theme and unique characters had an great influences on Korean people and culture such as film, novel, and pop music. A novelist and critic Namcheon Kim was one of the spectators of Pépé le Moko. He had watched the film in spring of 1939, and then wrote short story, A Wolf based on the film. In the short story, Kim created some his own characters on the model of Pépé and depicted a back street of Seoul just like that of casbah in northern african country, Algeria. In addition, he modeled the background and situation of the short story after those of Pépé le Moko.
