Abstract

It can be said that all texts are Intertextual in a sense. Texts cannot be free from preceding texts since they are based on the writers producing the texts, the contemporary ideology, grammar of genres, and the socio-cultural backgrounds to which they belong. The same is the case with picture books. The purpose of this research is to examine the aspect of Intertextuality of picture books that advocate superior artistic value while vivifying the advantages of the words and the picture to the utmost, and to attempt to categorizing them. The texts that are to be analyzed are “Le Loup Sentimental”, “Into the Forest” , and “The Three Little Pigs.” These three books show an interesting difference in the ways of embodying their themes while strongly revealing the Intertextuality of the texts. As a result, although the narrative structure cannot be hierarchical, the narrative methods of the Intertextuality of the texts could be categorized into: ① quotation and variation – linear structure (“Le Loup Sentimental”), ② imitation and representation – frame structure (“Into the Forest”), ③ hyper text – multilayer structure (“The Three Little Pigs”). Since these texts show aesthetic value from the combination of words and pictures, the Intertextuality of texts can be categorized when the correlations between these two particular media are examined. Words and pictures sometimes correspond to each other and sometimes conflict in creating new artistic value and it can be said that these techniques of mutual properties of texts contribute to creating new texts by making words and pictures supplement each other, expand, reinforce, and cause tensions of estrangement and contrast. I expect this theme to be actively discussed going forward.
