조선 중종 전반기 성균관 유생들의 사습(士習) 논란

조선시대 최고의 고등교육기관인 성균관은 임진왜란과 병자호란과 같은 국난 때 말고도 주지하다시피 폭군이었던 연산군(재위, 1494~1506) 때에 큰 수난을 겪었다. 그렇다면 반정을 거쳐 중종(재위, 1506~1544)이 즉위하여 40여년 가까이 통치하였는데 성균관은 과연 그 모든 기능이 정상대로 회복되지 아니하였겠는가? 이 같이 짐작하는 것이 당연지사이겠지만 역사적 현실은 의외로 성균관의 상황이 연산군 이전인 성종 때만큼은 좋아지지 아니 하였다는 점을 먼저 결론내릴 수 있다. 이 같은 결론을 얻기 위해 본고에서는 중종 재위 기간을 전반기와 후반기로 나누어 우선 전반기의 성균관 학풍상황에 대한 논란을 살펴보기로 하였다 . 성균관 사습이라고 할 때 그 사습은 결국 유생들의 풍습을 말하는 것이고, 그 풍습이라고 하는 것은 학풍이라든지, 도덕적인 자세와 태도라든지, 전반적인 학생다움이라고 하는 성실성을 두고 하는 말이었다. 그런데 이런 문제들을 연구하기 위해 살펴볼 수밖에 없는 문헌들은 항상 한정이 되어 있다. 주로 성균관과 관련되는 문헌들은 『조선왕조실록』, 『태학지』, 『승정원일기』, 『증보문헌비고』 등인데 이상하게도 『태학지』나 『승정원일기』, 『증보문헌비고』 등에는 본고의 연구자료로 사용할만한 직접적인 기사들이 거의 발견되지 아니 하였다. 어쩔 수 없이 주로 『조선왕조실록』에서 중종 시기의 직접적인 자료들을 가장 많이 찾아볼 수밖에 없었다. 중종 전반기에는 폐조로 인한 성균관 황폐화를 복구하는데 주력하였으나 외형적인 결과들은 어느 정도 회복되었지만 내용적인 결과들은 폐조 트라우마로 계속 신통치가 않았다. 그래서 그 문제들을 해결하기 위해 많은 논란들이 발생하였다. 폐조 핑계를 더 이상 대지 말자는 주장과 함께 국왕은 유생들의 사기진작을 위해 더욱 힘써야 된다는 것들이 거의 다수였다.
Abstract
Sungkyunkwan, the highest tertiary education institution of the Joseon Dynasty, suffered from King Yeonsangun(reign, 1494 ~ 1506). Then, after the reign of King Jungjong(reign, 1506 ~ 1544), it ruled for nearly 40 years, and Sungkyunkwan could not have been restored to normal? It is natural that this assumption is obvious, but the historical reality was not as good as the case of Sungjong, the situation before Sungkyunkwan unexpectedly. In this paper, we divided the period of King Jungjong and the latter half of King Jungjong into the first half of the year. When it comes to Sungkyunkwan customary practice, the custom is finally referring to the customs of Yusang, and its customs are the words of academicity, moral attitude, and integrity. In the first half of the middle school, we focused on repairing the devastation of Sungkyunkwan due to the outbreak, but the external result was recovered to some extent, but the results were not new. So much controversy arises to solve the problems. In addition to claiming that the arithmetic group should no longer be excluded, there were a number of things that the king should try harder to promote the morale of Yusang.
