우암(尤庵) 송시열(宋時烈) 선생(1607-1689)의 계녀서는 부덕 교육을 위한 한국의 대표적인 저술이다. 계녀서는 송시열이 그의 장녀가 출가할 때 국문으로 써서 부녀가 행할 修身과 齊家의 도리를 상세하게 적은 훈계로서, 부모 섬기는 도리, 남편 받드는 도리, 형제간의 화목하는 도리 등 시집간 여자가 지켜야 할 덕목을 20 항목에 걸쳐 자상하게 기록한 책이다. 이러한 가르침을 담은 계녀서는 아내와 어머니로서의 지혜를 드리우고 있다. 과거의 가족제도는 대가족제도로서, 부녀자의 교육은 개인보다 가족을 우선하고 생활도덕 가운데 대부분이 가족에 대한 것이었다. 그 중에서 효도를 가장 중시하였고, 대가족제도하에서의 孝悌 실천, 婦德 실천을 가족내의 실천행동으로 중요하게 여겼다. 송시열은 계녀서에서 특히 이러한 미덕을 갖춘 부녀자의 직분을 강조하였다. 부녀자의 직책과 행실 가운데 가장 중요한 것은, 효성을 다하여 부모와 시부모를 섬기며, 정성을 다하여 제사를 받들고, 남편을 유순하게 따르고, 동서간에 돈목을 다하고, 자녀 교육은 단정하게 하고, 비복은 관용과 위엄으로 부리고, 몸가짐은 정숙히 하고, 재물을 아끼고 의식을 검소하게 하며, 무당과 여승을 집안에 들이지 말 것이며, 예의를 지켜 어긋남이 없도록 할 것 등이다. 이와 같이 유순(柔順), 돈목(敦睦), 단정(端正), 관엄(寬嚴), 정숙(貞淑)을 내용으로 하는 부녀자의 미덕과 직책을 강조하여 가정의 화목을 이루고자 했다.
Abstract
Gyenyeoseo of Song, Si Yeol(1607-1689), is the representative book of traditional education for married women in Korea. Song wrote this book for his daughter for her marriage to teach her of her duties as a wife. This book tells 20 components of duties for married women; how to serve parents-in-laws and husband, and how to socialize with in-laws. Gyenyeoseo holds wisdom as a wife and mother. As the Korean traditional family system was a big family, education for women was respecting family before self. The virtue of lady (being dutiful to one's parents and siblings) was considered the most important duty. Following are important duties for women. They are to serve parents and parents-in-laws, to obey the husband, to be at peace with sister-in-laws, to be strict on children's education, to treat servants with dignity and generosity, to be chaste, to be frugal and live in a simple way, to not let the shamans and female monks in the house, and to observe decorums, etc. The content of the book is to harmonize the family by emphasizing the moral excellence and position of married women.
