Abstract

This paper's aim is to analyse the characterization of protagonist ‘Taeju’ in television drama The Empire of Gold, focusing on his impolite dialogue. Drama is defined as the genre of conflict, so that no dramatic components can display persistent and distinct attributes of character than impolite dialogues. Therefore, this paper discusses how the attributions of ‘Taeju’ are categorized, developed, and they are contributing to the drama's thematic development. In the first section, this paper classifies the typical Taeju’s attributions by the stylization of impoliteness. ; ‘rude and challenging’, 'Adventurer’s disposition and cynical’, ‘a cold blooded and greedy’. In the second section, this paper examines how these Taeju's attributes construct consistent his impression and change according to the drama's plot development. With character's development, this article explores thematic meanings related with political economics of capitalism and desire. Concludingly, this paper finds that Taeju is a dynamic and round character. ; On the one hand, Taeju personifies capitals, oedipus and paranoid desires, on the other hand, he symbolizes anti-capitalism, anti-oedipus and schizophrenic desires.
