엔도 슈사쿠(遠藤周作, 1923년―1996년）는 일본의 가톨릭 작가이다. 엔도 문학의 전반적인 핵심을 이루는 작품은 기독교를 소재로 한 소설들이라 할 수 있지만, 그 이외에도 에세이와 희곡 등 다양한 분야의 작품 활동을 전개해 왔다. 그 자신이 가톨릭 신자였던 엔도는 특히, 신학적, 혹은 기독교적 주제를 문학적 표현을 통해 나타내고자 했 다. 엔도는 그의 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 『침묵』을 통해 서양의 엄격한 부성적인 신을 일본 문화와 정서에 맞는 자비로운 모성적인 신으로 그려냄으로써, 신의 이미지에 대한 인식의 전환을 꾀했다. 또한 최후의 작품이 된 『깊은 강』은 종교다원주의 사상을 통한 종교의 경계 허물기 뿐만아니라, 더 나아가 종교 너머를 사유할 수 있게 하는 작품이다. 이와 같은 문학적 표현은, 자신의 종교를 맹목적으로 신앙하는 것이 아니라, 그에 대한 깊은 사색을 통해 나온 것이라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 이처럼 신학적 주제를 문학적 소재로 활용한 엔도의 작품을 통해, 문학적 상상력과 신학적 사유의 만남의 장이 어떻게 펼쳐지는지에 대해 살펴보고, 거꾸로 문학이 문학의 역할을 넘어 신학에 어떤 영향을 끼치게 되는지에 대해 고찰했다.
Abstract
Endo Shusaku (1923-1996) is a Japanexe Catholic writer. Although Endo's literature is constituted mainly of christianity novel, he had also been engaged in various activities such as essays and plays. As a Catholic, he wanted to express theological or christian themes in literary terms and had attempted to change the perception of God 's image through his masterpiece “Silence” by drawing the strictly paternal god of the West as a benevolent maternal god that conforms to Japanese culture and emotion, “Deep river”, which became the final work, not only breaks the boundaries of religion through the idea of religious pluralism, but also makes it possible to think beyond religion. This kind of literary expression can come by the contemplation of his religion. not from blind faith. The purpose of this study is to examine how the field of the encounter between the literary imagination and the theological thought is spread through the work of Endo, which uses the theological subject as a literary material, and, conversely, the influence of literature on theology beyond literature.
