Abstract
One of the characteristics of Mahayana Buddhism is that Buddha’s eternality is expressed in the three Buddhas of the past, present, and future. This study investigates Buddha’s eternal image in Baekje art, focusing on a recently recovered dossier of Sakya’s sarira (written in the mid-seventh century, AD) from the west pagoda of Mireuksa, South Korea. In particular, this study suggest that the spatial arrangement of Mireuksa(consisting of three pagodas and three main halls) may reflect Buddha’s eternal images of the past, present, and future, rather than representing the three assemblies under thedragon-flower tree. There are three main difficulties in interpreting Mireuksa’s three pagodas and three main halls as places for Maitreyas’ three assemblies under the dragon- flower tree (an interprestation based on a myth found in the Samgukyusa). Firstly, the arrangement of the dossier and the three assemblies under the dragon-flower tree is too monotonous. Secondly, the central hall and pagoda are surrounded by corridors and their sizes are much bigger (other than right and left halls). Finally, this construction supported by both sidesis different from the doctrine known as the Descent of Maitreya and then the Becoming a Buddha under the dragon-flower tree, because three spaces occupied by pagodas would not be required as the place of Maitreya’s three true principles. For these reasons, it is important to discover the fundamental idea of the three times in Mahayana Buddhism in order to evaluate the spatial system assigning Maitreya central to the temple, Sakyamuni associated with a dossier of Sakya’s sarira enshrined to the west pagoda and the past Buddha to the opposite side. This construction suggests that each pagoda may not simply represent Sakya’s nirvana and Maitreya’s descent on Earth, but the central hall is symbolic of the double strata as Maitreyas’three assemblies under the dragon-flower tree, and so the right and left pagodas can be understood as the Sakyamuni Buddha of the present and the past Buddha respectively. This study includes that Mireuksa temple represents Buddha’s eternality through the Buddhas of the three times. Moreover, consistent with Backje’s forward looking national ideology, Maitreya’s image as practicing the dharma of the future is the center of Mireuksa.
