재독 한인 소설에 나타난 개발독재시대의 기억과 자기표상

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to take a look on how the novels of Koreans in Germany are depicting the change of lives due to dispatch to Germany in the developmental dictatorship period. These novels are narrating the events in the process of emigration and settlement in Germany. The novels deal with family issues, cultural integration and reverse culture shock, and female migrators issues. Family is the most primary factor in the process of emigration and settlement. Different aspects of settlement are found through stories of having new Korean-German families with original Korean families dissolving because of anxiety and sense of isolation due to the separation of families or stories of Korean miners and nurses dispatched to Germany meeting in groups in order to obtain the official permission of longer stay via marriage. On one hand, there are bright stories of Koreans, who grow up as confident members in German society, and who achieve Korean-German cultural integration after settlement. However, on the other hand, there are stories of Koreans abandoning going home as well because of the reverse culture shock. They become borderers in that they cannot not fill in the cultural and economic difference between now and then of their mother country; their memories and custom are outdated, and they feel deprivation from how much cultural and economic standards of Korea developed while their life standards they thought hardly did. Gender role conflicts, labor exploitation, and family violence as a result of internalization and fixation of patriarchy are another primary theme. There are many novels that show familistic values where sacrificing for male family members are granted as female subalterns of developmental dictatorship period did. Even in the novels of female writers, it could be confirmed that problems are narrated in non-independent ways — concealing, equivocating, and insinuating —, keeping patriarchy in oneself.
