Abstract

This study sheds light on Goo, Young-Pil's whereabouts, activities and significances in the Korean Independence movement. In the early 1910s when Korea was deprived her sovereignty, Goo, Young-Pil organizes 'Ilhapsa' and since then he participated in Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, Kunjongso and Uiyoldan. In 1920s, he started to build the base of anti-Japanese independence movement in Ningguta area, North Manchuria. This time, to acquire independence, he focused on two subjects : culture-education and promotion of industries. These subjects were different from armed struggle against Japan. Because he thought that the armed struggle against Japan was at the breaking point in 1920s. To overcome this situation, in his opinion, establishing the foundation of independence movement had to be preceded. Therefore he purchased wasteland with large amount of money, and cultivated the land to settle the Korean emigrants. He established educational facilities and organs of public opinion to enhance the spirit of independence. Also, he unfolded autonomy movement by acquiring Chinese citizenship to get over the restrictions of status as Korean. This study examines diverse aspects of anti-Japan independence movement in North Manchuria in 1920s and it's effects on the whole Korean Independence Movement as the armed struggle against Japan was depressed.
