Abstract
In Joseon Chulpan Gyeongchal Wolbo, a document issued to censor publications in Joseon during the Japanese colonial period, records of the reasons for administrative measures related to anarchism magazines can be found. In this regard, through this article seeks to reveal the censorship trends and meaning of the anarchism magazine. In particular, through the censorship of anarchism magazines published in Japan by Koreans who visited Japan, it sought to examine the pattern of ideological control by the Japanese Government General of Korea on imported publications. The anarchism magazines published by Koreans in Japan that can be confirmed in Joseon Chulpan Gyeongchal Wolbo are Heukjeon (black war), Jayucheonneon (free youth), and Tomin (the natives). Through the censorship data, it was confirmed that Heukjeon, Jayucheonneon, and Tomin were related to Heukwoo federation (Black friendship federation), a Korean anarchist group which worked in Japan, and that they pursued communal anarchism. They shared a sense of purpose to propagate to the masses and the peasants the anarchist ideology that criticized the class and the capitalist system. However, this tendency of magazines became subject to the control by the Japanese Government General of Korea, which sought to regulate publications-related to ideologies. The Japanese Government General of Korea implemented a regulatory policy through the revision of the Publication Police Act for publications imported from Japan as well as publications published in colonial Joseon in order to prevent the ideologies from being introduced into colonial Chosun. This shows that it was a result of censorship influenced by the view that critical ideas about the government, class, and capitalism, such as anarchism, could interfere with its own ruling system.
