Abstract

This study focuses on『Ice Island』, the last collection of poems by Sakutaro Hagiwara, a poet who is considered the true completer of Japanese free poetry, and examines the literary historical significance and background of the modern Japanese poet's return to written poetry. Sakutaro Hagiwara's last poetry collection, 『Ice Island』, focuses on the fact that it was written in Chinese characters, and there is a strong tendency to discuss Sakutaro's poetry, which has promoted free spoken poetry, as <Exhaustion> or <Degeneration>. However, 『Ice Island』 is neither a poem of anger nor a poem of lament. Also, it is neither a depleted poem nor a deteriorated poem.『Ice Island』, which embraces <Shade> and always chases <Endless Nostalgia>, was a poem of longing by a poet who constantly pursued change.
