Abstract

Philipp Franz Balthasa von Siebold(1796-1866)was a German Physician, botanist and traveler. He achieved prominence by his studies of Japanese flora and fauna and the introduction of Western medicine in Japan. On 28 June 1823, after only a few months in the Dutch East Indies, Siebold was poste as resident physician and scientist to Dejima, a small artificial island and trading post at Nagasaki, and arrived there on 11 Auust 1823. Japanese scinetists invited Siebold tp show them the barvels of sestern scinece, and he learned in return them mucho about the Japanese and their customs. In 1824 Siebold started a medical school in Nagasaki, the Narutaki-juku, that grew into a meetion place for around fifity students. They helped him in his botanical and naturalistic studies. Siebold’s main interest, however, focused on the study of Japanese fauna and flora. He collecxted as much material as he could. Statind a small botanical garden behind his home(there was nat muchi roon on the small islade) Siebold amassed over 1,000 native plants. In a specially built glsshouse he cultivated the Japanese Plants. Local Japanese artist like Kawahara Keiga drew and painted images of these plants, creating botanicla illustrations but alse images of the daily life in Japan, which complemented his ethnographic collection. Siebold formally received permission from the Dutch Government-General of Indonesia in 1824 to create a botanical garden in Dejima. The opportunity for him to collect plants necessary for the creation of a botanical garden was from the trip to Edo in 1826. To make the most of this trip, Siebold brought 1,000 species of plants and seeds from Dejima to Indonesia and the Netherlands. This helped to cultivation enforcement. Despite the failure, he also showed interest in ginseng and attempted to cultivate it in Nagasaki.
