Abstract

This paper provides a critical review of Lee Kwang ouk’s book The Underlayer and the Reverse Side of Colonial Theater Culture during the Japanese Colonial Period, highlighting its contribution to expanding the scope of modern Korean theater studies. Lee shifts the focus from text-centered analyses to the relationships among audience, theater space, and media, proposing a “reception-centered” approach to performance studies. His introduction of the concept of the “implied audience” seeks to recover the hidden strata of theatrical experience and the cultural participation of the people. Furthermore, Lee’s methodological transition across the boundaries of theater and film demonstrates the potential for a more integrated field of performance and media studies. This review interprets his work as an “advocacy for the peripheral,” and emphasizes its significance in suggesting new directions for the historiography of modern Korean theater.
