Abstract

This study examines the ways in which Park Kyung-ri’s 1960s short stories—The Noblewoman, The Period of Fantasy, and Old Tales—represent memories of the colonial period. The Noblewoman, published shortly after the April 19 Revolution, is the first work in which such memories appear, albeit in a fragmentary form. While the story portrays a character suspected of pro-Japanese collaboration during the late colonial period, it remains silent on this issue. The colonial past, at this point, is depicted merely as one scene within the turbulent flow of history from the colonial era to the April Revolution, without yet attaining concrete historical significance. For Park, the colonial memory was not yet her own, nor had it reached the stage of historical signification. After the Korea-Japan agreement in 1965, Park’s representation of colonial memory moves toward a deeper engagement with its historical meaning. The Period of Fantasy transforms her personal recollections of colonial childhood into fiction, intertwining nationalist nostalgia with personal sentiment. The story vividly reveals Park’s complex interiority as a “colonized subject.” In Old Tales, the memory of national resistance comes to the forefront, yet under the entanglement of postcolonial and Cold War conditions, such memory becomes distorted or fails to be transmitted. Across these works, Park’s mode of representing colonial memory in the 1960s increasingly gravitates toward nationalism, prefiguring the grand historical vision of Land(Toji). As a “colonized subject,” Park’s postcolonial remembering inevitably produces omissions and excesses, resulting in narrative fissures and contradictions. Yet these traces themselves testify to the significance of Park’s literary world as a crucial record of the complexity and paradoxes inherent in Korea’s colonial memory.
