Abstract

Once known as a waste land ogf culture, the city of Pusan has, since 1996, been hosting the Pusan International Film Festival. It has set an example of a new cultural festival aimed at a young generation that is familiar with enjoyment, festivity, and participation. Now, the organizers are hoping that it will not only be known as Asia's best international film festival but become accepted as one of the world's famous film festivals. What then is the festival's special cultural qualities? And how shall we understand the significance of the film festival in this cultural age? This study aims to supply some answers to these questions. Chapter 1 will suggest ways of approaching the new concepts of culture as accepted by today's people and the characteristics of festivals observed in various cultural events. Chapter 2 attempts to formulate the identity of the film festival by analyzing its purpose, main programs, and awards given out by category. Chapter 3 will examine the contents of the official speeches given by the chairs of the organizing committee and the executive board, messages by the programmer of the film festival, and information available on the festival's website to arrive at the aesthetics of the film festival located at the deep level of its identity. By looking at the interconnected relationship between the film festival's identity and its aesthetics, Chapter 4 examines the special qualities of the Pusan International Film Festival, that of being both festival and industry. Chapter 5 offers an analysis and criticism of the film festival as a cultural festival and discusses the prospects of the festival.
