Abstract

This study examined the present condition of the creation of forest museums in Korea and analyzed the importance of visiting motivations before the visit and satisfaction levels after the visit by surveying visitors to forest museums. By doing so, this study aimed to suggest directions for the management of forest museums. To this end, a preliminary survey was conducted in March 2011, and 613 questionnaires about the current forest museums were collected and analyzed between July and October 2011. The current forest museums consist of one national museum and nine public ones. Moreover, each do has one museum, except Gyeoggi-do running two. Analysis of the importance of the visiting motivations showed that there were significant differences in 11 categories except ‘curiosity about forest museums.’ Satisfaction levels after the visit also showed significant differences in categories as the pre-importance did. The pre-importance and post-satisfaction of the visiting motivations were compared, and the results revealed that the averages increased after the visit to a forest museum in the following five categories: ‘curiosity about a forest museum,’‘visiting an attraction,’ ‘spending time with friends or families,’ ‘low costs,’ and ‘coincidently visiting after neighboring facilities.’ The post-satisfaction was lower than the pre-importance in six categories, namely ‘knowledge about plants,’‘knowledge about animals and insects,’ ‘accessibility,’ ‘participation such as a field trip,’ ‘visiting a museum or exhibition,’and ‘level of learning.’ As for ‘general understanding of forests,’ the pre-importance and the post-satisfaction were similar. In order to enhance satisfaction levels of visits to forest museums, the museums should be utilized as places for first-hand experience and education through expansion of exhibits and use of various exhibiting methods.
