Abstract
This paper aims for textlinguistic research on television caption widely used in Korean Television programs. The first aim is to classify the function of television caption and the second aim is to set up general principles and writing principles on television caption. And the last aim is to suggest producers and caption writers how these principles could be adapted. when they write and use the television caption. The function of television caption can be classified into five categories; transmitting digested information, complementation to spoken language, intentional expression and informing additional data. The general principles can be set up on five criterions; roll, quantity, subject and purpose, capability of communication, reality and correctness and language norm. And when we write television caption, we can adapt the five writing principles; condensing, extraction, deletion, addition and correction.
