Abstract

This research aims to review a development process of Gangnam new town , which was transformed into modern urban areas from quiet rural areas in a relatively short period, from the institutional, technological and geographical perspectives, and further highlight the problems arising from the development process. The government launched and provided its full-fledged support for the all-out development of vast Gangnam area, which was driven by policy and institutional concerns rather than rational and specialized planning. The land subdivision readjustment and residential land development project were carried out for the development of Gangnam new town, so that the town has regularly patterned appearances marked by cross stripes-shaped roads and super blocks. As the development project went on, the town has stretched from areas easily accessible to downtown Gangbuk area to flat areas and outskirt along the highway. However, as the development of residential areas centered on individual land parcels such as the pilot housing complex and designated apartment districts, the development process produced vast idle areas resulting in inefficiency and disorder of land use. The development of Gangnam new town has changed urban internal structure in Seoul and served as a springboard for Seoul to become a global city. Nevertheless, due to lack of prior research and concrete plans on the area and the implementation of a stop-gap and hasty policy, it? historicity were swept away and the development of Gangnam new town has produced a uniform landscape repetitiously filled with apartments and skyscrapers, and caused polarization between Gangnam and Gangbuk areas.
