지리교과서에 나타난 도시 내용의 변화 분석 - 지식과 교육 내용의 관계를 중심으로 -

본 연구는 1970년대부터 2000년대까지 발행된 고등학교 1학년 지리교과서에서 다루는 도시 내용을 시기별·주제별로 분석하여 도시지리학의 지식과 교육 내용이 어떤 관계를 가지고 변화하여 왔는지 고찰하였다. 1970년대부터 1990년대까지의 교과서는 학문과 교육 내용을 동일시한 경향이 짙었는데, 교육 내용이 도시지리학의 분절적 영역 체계에 따라 조직되고, 사실과 이론을 중심으로 한 학문적 연구물을 단순화한 수준으로 기술되었다. 이러한 경향은 1984년 교과서에서 가장 잘 찾아볼 수 있다. 1980년대 후반부터 도시지리학의 학문 영역과 관점은 유연하고 다양해졌으며, 빠르게 변화했다. 그러나 이러한 경향은 미처 1990년대 교과서에 반영되지 못하고 도시지리학과 도시에 대한 교육 내용의 간극은 점차 커졌다. 더욱이 2000년대의 교과서에서는 도시지리학의 연구 결과를 단순화시키기에는 연구물이 너무 많고 교육할 수 있는 시간과 교과서 지면이 제한되었기 때문에 수많은 도시지리학의 연구 결과 중 전통처럼 내려오는 내용을 압축하거나 해체하는 방법으로 가르칠 내용을 재구성하였다. 학문적 지식과 실제적 지식간의 경계가 느슨해지고 새로운 정보와 지식이 빠르게 증가하는 현대 사회에서 교육 내용은 전통적인 지식의 구조를 탈피하여 도시 생활을 향유하고 자신을 둘러싼 도시 환경을 운용하는데 필요한 실천적 지식을 중심으로 구조화되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to explore the changing patterns of the relationship between academic knowledge and subject matter in urban geography by analyzing high school geography textbooks from 1970s to 2005. Overall, during the period between 1970s and 1990s, the Korean geography education had stuck to the basic content of the discipline, and the textbooks were organized according to the discipline?s system of sub-fields and described facts and theories that the scholars of urban geography had established. The 1984 textbook best reflects this tendency. On the other hand, the urban geography was in transition since the late 1980s in the sense that the topics and theoretical approaches of the discipline became more diverse and flexible, and thus, the whole framework of the discipline had changed rapidly. However, during the 1990s, the textbooks did not reflect this new tendency of the discipline, and therefore, the gap between the discipline and textbooks has increased. Moreover, the 2005 textbook contains even more limited amount of contents because of the limited space assigned to the urban geography. Based on these findings, an implication of this research might be that geography education should be focused on the practical knowledge by which students are able to not only understand but also utilize the urban environment where they live.
