Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigsate not only the origin of but also the rise and fall of Dubrovnik, a walled city in Balkan Peninsula founded in the Middle ages. This paper mainly focuses on analyzing how this city has made much use of and has strengthened its predominance in geopolitics as that it is located in a keypoint or meeting place between different cultures, that is to say, between Mediterranean races and the Slavs, or between Catholic culture and Muslim culture. Although Dubrovnik was built disorderly in the Lagusa period, it can be concluded that the city grew as a planned city as the size of the city expanded. It is also obvious that the location of Dubrovnik on Dalmatian coast with high sinuosity ratio was of great advantage to the city in terms of the interchange of cultures. Through making use of excellent talents for trade and diplomacy, Dubrovnik could maintain its position as an independent state among neighboring powerful countries.
