Abstract

There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Croatia(Hrvatska): six cultural heritage(Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian, Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Poreč, Historic city of Trogir, Cathedral of Saint James in Šibenik, Stari Grad Plain in Hvar and Old City of Dubrovnik) and one natural heritage(Plitvice Lakes National Park). Among these heritages, Dubrovnik is a tourist destination, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site which holds its best shape among several medieval castles in the world. Every year, many tourists from all over the world are visiting this place. During medieval times, she was called ‘Ragusa principality’. Ragusa Principality, as a intermediary trade country like a Venice Principality, has accumulated its wealth and fame across the Western, the Oriental area, and all over the world including America. Dubrovnik is called “treasure trove of history” which safely retain the characteristics of the medieval city. So, the UNESCO designated Dubrovnik for UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979. Since then, its scope was extended to medieval hermitages outside of castle in 1994. During the Yugoslavian Civil War, this city, world heritage site, has to suffer the pain of being destroyed by the shelling of the serbian army and military operation of serbian national minority. Since that time, UNESCO has recognized the significance of the ‘Dubrovnik as historic heritage value’, and has fully supported the restoration for the ‘value as restored model of World Heritage and rebuilding will of UNESCO’. In this study, I will study how UNESCO estimated a value of Dubrovnik as a World Heritage Site. And I will analyze what the restoration and reconstruction of Dubrovnik has implications to UNESCO, and based on this, I will explore a world heritage development strategy of UNESCO and its implications.
