본 연구는 토론토 한인들의 이민 초창기와 최근 거주지의 분포 특성과 변화에 대한 것이다. 자료의 한계와 편차로 인해 정확한 비교 연구가 어렵지만, 가시적인 지도화, 집중지수·상이지수·입지계수와 같은 수치화 과정을 통해 한인들의 거주지 격리와 분포 변화를 도출하였다. 토론토 한인의 본격적인 정착은 1963년 양국간 수교 이후 영구 정착을 목적으로 하는 이민자들이 들어오면서 시작되었다. 초창기의 한인 이민자 대부분은 홀로 입국하여 저렴한 쪽방과 유리한 정착환경과 정보를 갖춘 블루어 코리아타운에서 단기간 정착 인큐베이터 시기를 보내고 난 후, 토론토 각지의 저렴한 정부보조 공영주택을 찾아 공간적으로 분포하였다. 그러다가 한인 거주지역은 초창기와 다르게 노스욕 코리아타운으로 집적하게 되면서 거주지 격리현상이 심화되었다. 이는 다른 민족들과의 비교하면 그 격리 정도가 매우 높은 편이다.
Abstract
This paper intends to present a brief description about spatial segregation and distribution change of residential space of Korean ethnic immigrants in Toronto. Although it is difficult to make exact comparative studies due to limitations and deviations of data, this paper aims at analyzing of residential distribution change of ethnic Koreans from the initial immigrant period to the present using the visible mapping and quantity analysis such as concentration index, location quotient, and index of dissimilarity. The initiation of diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea in 1963 provided Koreans with the opportunity to immigrate for permanent settlement. Most of the early Korean immigrants settled alone in Bloor Korean Town with low-cost rooming house and lots of information. After the short term of incubation period, they tend to distribute in search of government-subsidized public housing in all parts of Toronto. However, Korean residential areas are becoming increasingly segregated. Besides, the most segregated region (North York) is completely separate from distinctive residential spaces in the initial immigrant period. The latest segregated index of ethnic Koreans is very high compared with other ethnic groups.
