Abstract
In this study, I highlight the changes in Yoko Tawada’s work published after the 3.11. disaster. The themes of isolation and extinction are common in disaster literature. However, Tawada’s work after 3.11. disaster highlight the country of Japan, the Japanese culture, and the concept of regressing to the past. In the book, “Island of immortality” and “The Emissary”, after the disaster, Japan regresses and displays characteristics of the Edo period. Perceptions of the Edo period play a role in reversing the dystopian future society of this book. In addition, Hiruko, the main character of "Scattered All Over The Earth", is portrayed as a trans-boundary character, but at the same time, he shows a contradictory attitude of sticking to Japanese culture and her native language. Moreover, many references to Japanese culture, including Japanese mythology, appear throughout this novel. It is the difference between the orientation of the text and the phenomenon appearing on the surface layer, and is interpreted as the result of the inferior nationalism inside the author after 3.11. disaster. In these characteristics, we considered the elements of 'nationalism' implied in Yoko Tawada's disaster literature.
