Abstract
This study examines the substantial shifts in spatial setting, narrative technique, and thematic focus that appear in Part 3, Archipelago of the Sun, the concluding volume of Yoko Tawada’s Europe-based trilogy, written amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that Tawada is known for responding sensitively to contemporary social issues and weaving them into her fiction, the third installment can be understood as a direct reflection of the social disruptions and heightened awareness of the problems brought about by the pandemic. By examining in detail the aspects and implications of these changes, this paper identifies a thematic shift in the series: the influence of the pandemic appears as the breakdown of the boundaries separating nation and people. This change of thematic consciousness suggests that Tawada's earlier focus on disaster literature, centered on nuclear issues since March 11, has largely shifted to the destruction of boundaries such as the country, people, and language. Ultimately, this transformation marks a solid reconstruction of the de-boundarying perspective that Tawada had maintained from the outset of her career.
