Abstract

The expressions てならない (-tenaranai), てたまらない (-tetamaranai), and てしかたがない (-teshikataganai) are typically used with verbs and adjectives that express feelings or sensations, and indicate that the degree is extreme. This study examines these three expressions and posits that adjectives can be classified based on the differences in the words that precede the three expressions. This study investigates the frequency of co-occurrence of each of the three expressions and 275 adjectives by conducting Internet searches using the goo search engine (https://www.goo.ne.jp/). The results show that the three expressions are common in that they tend to co-occur with highly emotional adjectives, such as 嬉しい (happy), 楽しい (fun), and 憎い (hateful), and are less likely to co-occur with highly attributed adjectives such as 赤い (red), 丸い (round), and 四角い (square). However, the results also reveal differences in the co-occurrence patterns of the three expressions with adjectives such as 眠たい (drowsy), 気持ち良い (feels good), and 蒸し暑い (muggy); 渋い (bitter), 苦い (bitter), and 柔らかい (soft); 危ない (dangerous), 紛らわしい (confusing), and 物足りない (unsatisfactory); and 近い (close), 緩い (loose), and 細い (thin). This study presents てならない (-tenaranai), てたまらない (-tetamaranai), and てしかたがない (-teshikataganai) as additional criteria for classifying adjectives and categorizes adjectives into six stages.
