Abstract

This study analyzes the androgynous characters and imagery in the works of Oe Kenzaburo (1935-2023), showing that they are not merely idiosyncratic features of the author’s imagination, but symbolize a mode of being that resists binary opposition. These representations are connected to ideas that permeate Oe’s spiritual world throughout his long career as a writer. From his earlier works, Oe consistently engaged with questions of gender. In The Flaming Green Tree trilogy (1993-1995), the protagonist Sat-chan subverts conventional norms. As an androgynous figure who has transitioned from male to female, Sat-chan not only occupies the central role in the narrative, but also serves as its narrator. Read through the lens of Carl Jung’s analytical psychology, androgyny in Oe’s work is reinterpreted as an archetype of the unconscious, a figure moving fluidly between masculinity and femininity, embodying the unity of opposites. As an anima symbol of “Ghi” this figure enables men to gain deeper insight. Furthermore, Sat-chan functions as Oe’s persona, through whom the author’s vision of the idealized novelist takes shape.
