Abstract

Various phenomena concerning Korean students studying abroad have been flourished in Korea since the 1990s. This educational migration shows the specific problem of parents?overzealous desire for education aiming at higher social class in Korean society. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of transnational networks of Korean students studying abroad as a kind of symbolic capital, through geographical perspectives. By analyzing the pertinent articles of Korean newspapers, we could find two regions are most frequently represented for Korean educational migration: the Kangnam in Seoul, Korea, and the American East, in terms of respectively origin and destination. This shows that students studying abroad are linked to the space of upper and upper-middle classes?habitus and embedded in specific region. Also, many students and their parents use their social and cultural transnational networks where local scales of diverse subjectives?activities are interconnected and mutually affected. Therefore, they acquire ?ranslocality?which means that transnational social ties of ?ere?and ?here?intersect and take root in the network of a local community. As a result, we can conclude that the transnationalism is not the phenomenon that decreases the meaning of locality, but the spatial process that can be specified through local situations.
