Abstract
The culture itself is being more important as the 21st century is so called as a century of culture. The cultural capital have actively studied in advances economies based on the concept of cultural capital as Throsby suggested. This study attempts not only to classify the stock of cultural capitals in 234 administrative units of shi·gun·gu according to their characteristics of sub-categories of cultural capitals, but also to analyze its spatial distribution pattern, The major findings of this study are as follows: First, the spatial distribution of the cultural capital shows a highly uneven pattern in Korea, strongly concentrating the capital region. Second, 234 regions can be classified into seven different groups. The capital region is categorized into a abundant cultural capital group with several other metropolitan cities, while the others are categorized into the insufficient group. There are some local cities which have higher level than the capital region, suggesting the implementation of development strategies based on their superior position on cultural capital. However, most local regions are suffering from lack of the cultural capital. It needs to promote local cultural planning as well as culture oriented policies to make more balanced regional development from regional economic development.
