Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the border demarcation negotiation process held in 2 border meetings between the Choson and Chung before and after the establishment of Mt. Baikdu Demarcation Stone, and to investigate the Choson people's awareness on northen territory and ideological background at that time. The target of the study was limited to the border demarcation negotiation process between the Choson and Chung. The time scope of the study was limited from before the establishment of Mt. Baikdu Demarcation Stone in 1712 to after the organization of the border meeting. The spacial scope of the study was limited to the Choson and Chung. Its contents were limited to investigating the Choson people's awareness on northen territory and ideological background at that time. This study adopted historical approach method, and as for the investigation, literature investigation method was used. As for the analysis, descriptive analysis method was used. As a result of the study, it was found that the Choson and Chung had to reexamine the contents and meanings of demarcation through 2 border meetings conducted for resolving the border problem. Second, the Choson people at that time understood their territorial sovereignty and had the practical awareness to secure it. Third, the accumulation of geographical information of northern territory and the growth and changes of modern territory awareness have later become our ideological background for the border problem between the Choson and Chung.
