Abstract

Recently, platforms have intervened in various areas of urban life by providing a wide range of services, including shopping, delivery, mobility, and finance. As the confluence of platforms and cities brings about the fundamental transition in urban space and life, geography and urban studies have proposed the notion of ‘platform urbanism’ to capture the interplay between the urban and platform. This review paper is a preliminary study on platform urbanism, and the purposes of this research are as follows. First, this research summarizes the concept and roles of platforms in the urban context. Secondly, this paper examines how prior research conceptualized and analyzed the notion of platform urbanism. Moreover, it reveals the distinctive nature of platform urbanism, which previous studies suggested through the comparison with smart urbanism. Finally, this study explores the sociospatiality of platform urbanism, thus capturing the interaction between the urban and platform and suggesting the implication of changing relationship between cities and technological innovations.
