Though noun modifying adverbs have been regarded as adverbs until recently, it is reasonable that they should be classified into pre-nouns, not adverbs, considering their grammatical characteristics. However, because they carry modality in meaning and are always located in front of demonstrative pre-nouns, but the most far from nouns, they cannot be included in the traditional pre-noun classes, such as demonstrative, numeral, or descriptive. Thus, we propose ‘modal pre-noun’, as a new pre-noun class. This is not simply a device to regard problematic elements as pre-nouns because this makes it possible to explain the syntagmatic order of pre-noun classes more reasonably. In addition, we found a close connection between the syntagmatic order of pre-nouns and the modality meaning of each pre-noun. This can be explaned more clearly through the establishment of ‘modal pre-noun’. Also, this pre-noun class is a more appropriate application to the fixed syntagmatic order of other Korean linguistic units comparel to the traditional classes. This fact shows that the syntagmatic order of pre-nouns is fixed by the cognitive constructions that govern general Korean linguistic phenomena. This further validates the establishment of a ‘modal pre-noun’ class.
