잠재어와 접사 －‘갈림길’형 복합명사를 중심으로－

This paper aims to examine the conceptual validity of the potential word and the grammatical category of affixes focused on complex nouns of ‘kallimkil(갈림길)’ type. We suppose that a potential word have a valid morphological form and a potentiality as a word. For example, we usually suppose that ‘kallim(kalli갈리+m음)’ have a valid derivational form and a potentiality as a noun. But the process of a potential word formation is not the final process of a word formation. And it is different from the process of a actual word formation because it is not related to the word meaning. In this paper I conclude that ‘kallim(kalli갈리+m음)’ is not a potential word, it is but only a temporary form made temporarily in the process of a formation of a compound word ‘kallimkil(갈림길)’. An Affix ‘-m(음)’ combined in the previous form ‘kallim(갈림)’ of the complex word ‘kallimkil(갈림길)’ is not a derivational affix because it does not form a (actual) word. And it is not a inflectional affix because it does not combine with a root in the process of inflection. In this paper I conclude that it is a lexical affix because it combines with a root in the process of a lexical word formation.
