대학교수 호칭어 ‘교수’와 ‘교원’의 경쟁 관계 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the competition and substitution relationship between the titles 'professor'(교수) and 'teacher'(교원) for professors. In Chapter 2, we analyze the usage of 'professor' and 'teacher', and in Chapter 3, identify the competition between 'professor' and 'teacher.' And we interpret the background of the competition in terms of the norms of the language community and the relationship between the professors and the staffs of it. As a result of data analysis, it was confirmed that the basic title for professors has already been changed to 'teacher' or 'university teacher' in laws with education, the articles of incorporation, and the university regulations. In the posting data of the university members, ‘professor’ and ‘teacher’ were used together at a similar rate. There was a difference according to the subject of use, and it was found that the professors used ‘professor’ much more than ‘teacher,’ while the other members such as staff used ‘teacher’ more. We interpret that the staffs lead the change from ‘professor’ to ‘teacher.’ The background in which ‘professor’ and ‘teacher’ formed a competitive relationship and ‘professor’ gradually changed to ‘teacher’ was interpreted in two ways. On the surface, it reflects the change in the university's linguistic norms, and at the same time reflects the elevated status of the staffs because of university democratization. These changes are going on the written language, and the university members only use 'teacher' as a term of reference not a term of address. Nevertheless, once ‘teacher’ pushes out ‘professor’ and settles completely in written language, it will spread to spoken language. In this regard, continuous observation and research on the usage of ‘professor’ and ‘teacher’ are needed in the future.
