초록

The purpose of the study is to compare two listening course syllabi and examine the effect of the remodeled course on the students’ course satisfaction level and their listening comprehension. In 2013 the course materials underwent comprehensive revision from previous years from audio to videotext with applied higher-order and lower-order listening processes in the teaching of listening skills. The remodeled course also incorporated student assignments into the course organization in order to draw more participation from the learners. Student satisfaction level was measured through the student course evaluations of 2012 and 2013. Pre- and post-tests were administered to compare change in listening comprehension ability. Results showed that significant improvements were made in all the student course evaluation items in the remodeled course. Listening comprehension ability, measured through a TOEFL listening comprehension test, also showed more improvement among students who took the remodeled course. Using videotexts in the listening classroom and a well-designed listening syllabus can significantly raise interest and the satisfaction level of learners, as well as improve their listening competence. Limitations of the study and suggestions for follow-up research are also presented.
