문세영 편 『조선어사전』(1938)과 조선총독부 편 『조선어사전』(1920) 미간행 원고의 비교 연구

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze two Korean dictionaries compiled in the early 20th century, in order to clarify the differences in their macrostructure and microstructure according to their compilation purposes. Although the Joseon’eo Sajeon published by the Government-General of Korea in 1920 was a bilingual Korean-Japanese dictionary, a manuscript (hereafter referred to as MA), which explains Korean words in Korean, remains from the compilation process. This paper analyzes the materials housed in Kyujanggak, presumed to be manuscripts from around 1917, and compares them with Se-yeong Moon's Joseon’eo Sajeon (hereafter referred to as JS), published in 1938, which is the first published Korean dictionary. The analysis reveals that MA utilized a structure that maximized the use of knowledge of Chinese characters, such as the arrangement order of headwords, the establishment of sub-headwords, the annotation of Idu readings, and the marking of hybrid words. In contrast, JS consistently arranged headwords in Hangul alphabetical order and provided detailed morphological and part-of-speech information for each headword. Furthermore, while MA did not include any loanwords, JS listed contemporary loanwords, reflecting the fact that MA was compiled for the purpose of reading ancient Korean texts. Additionally, unlike MA, JS extensively recorded variants caused by orthographic confusion, designating the standard form as the main headword and the rest as secondary headwords, thus showing a prescriptive approach.
