한국어 문법 학습 보조 도구로서 생성형 AI의 활용 가능성 탐구 - 초급 유사 문법 항목을 중심으로 -

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the potential of using generative AI as a tool for teaching and learning similar grammar patterns in Korean. To do so, explanations were requested from four generative AI models using example sentences of beginner-level Korean grammar contrasts presented on the National Institute of Korean Language’s ‘Center for teaching and learning Korean’ website. The experiment was conducted with four freely accessible generative AIs available to learners—ChatGPT-4o, Gemini, Clova X, and Wrtn. For each grammar contrast, both grammatical and ungrammatical sentences were inputted, and the AIs were asked to explain the reason for the differences. A total of 109 grammar contrasts and their example sentences were used to formulate the questions. The AI responses were categorized into three types: clearly correct, not incorrect but vague, and incorrect. As a result of analyzing the AI responses, ChatGPT showed the highest accuracy, followed by Gemini, Wrtn, and Clova X. Analysis of incorrect responses revealed several issues: failure to explain idiomatic usages of grammar, inadequate explanation of morphological constraints, identifying ungrammatical sentences as grammatical, grammatical errors in the explanations or corrected sentences, and providing explanations based on meanings different from those intended in the example sentences. Based on these findings, the study suggests using learners’ own writing or speaking data or ‘Korean Learners’ Corpus Search Engine’ as learning materials for similar grammar tasks using generative AI. It is proposed that learners can independently identify the causes of grammatical errors through interactions with generative AI. Additionally, the study recommends using ChatGPT as the primary tool, while emphasizing the importance of clear explanations and feedback from instructors. In an era where the integration of generative AI into foreign language education has become inevitable, this study is meaningful in that it verifies the feasibility of using generative AI as a supplementary tool for teaching and learning beginner-level similar grammar in Korean, and suggests practical ways to implement it.
