이 연구의 목적은 국립소록도병원에 거주하는 한센병 환자들의 유대 방식을 탐구함으로써 소록도 환자들 간 관계를 중심으로 소록도의 현상황을 개선시키기 위한 개입(intervention)이 필요한지를 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구자는 2006년 5월부터 2011년 8월까지 간헐적이나 지속적으로 수행된 현지 연구 결과 생산된 참여관찰 자료를 바탕으로 환자들 사이의 관계를 조사하였다. 조사 결과, 소록도에는 ‘도움’과 ‘가시’로 상징되는 환자들의 두 대표적 행위가 발견되며, 이는 각각 소록도 환자들의 표현에 따르면 자신보다 약하다고 인식되는 환자를 도와주거나 아니면 약한 점을 수단으로 ‘못된 짓’을 하는 행위를 지칭하고 있었다. 그런데 환자들의 이상과 같은 유대 방식은 우연에 의해 형성되지 않고 국립소록도병원의 구조적 기능에 체계적으로 반응하는 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 환자들은 행위 주체로서 자신이 속한 의료기관의 기능 및 성격에 반응하며 환자들 간 ‘수평적 차별화’와 ‘수직적 차별화’를 각각 만들어 내고 있었으며 그 결과 소록도 환자들 사이에는 공존의 구조와 폭력의 구조가 자리 잡고 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 이상의 논의를 토대로 본 연구자는 행위를 통해 실현되는 인간의 주관에 관여함으로써 소록도 내 사회적 폭력을 양산하는 문제적 행위를 재정향할 필요가 있음을 언급하였다.
Abstract
The study explores how to improve the quality of living conditions in the leprosarium on Sorok Island (Sorokdo) based on the relationship between Sorokdo patients. The study is based on fieldwork that has been conducted since May 2006. I found two patterns of patient behaviors called “help” and “thorn” meaning “helping of the weaker patients” and “mistreatment of the weaker patients”, respectively. “Help” involves performing duties of the sort usually carried out by nurses; because there is a shortage of nurses, the stronger patients must contribute to the care of the weaker. When a Sorokdo patient encounters a weaker patient, he may interact with him in one of two ways. First, he may try to improve his condition: this is called “horizontal differentiation”. Second, he may take advantage of him somehow: this is called “vertical differentiation”. I suggest ways to improve the way that patients interact with each other, and help them contribute in a positive way to the hospital system.
