처세(處世)인가 윤리(倫理)인가: 20세기 ‘동양윤리’의 문제점과 새로운 정

19-20세기를 거치며 동아시아 전통 학문은 서구적 학문의 방법과 틀을 수용하지 않을 수 없었다. 그 중에서도 유학(Confucianism)은 스스로를 서구적 학문의 분야 가운데 철학, 특히 윤리학의 범주에 속하는 것으로 변화시키고자 했다. 하지만 현실적으로는 오히려 일종의 ‘처세’(處世)로 소비되어 온 경향이 강하다. 이 글은 이러한 물음에 대한 나름의 생각을 담고 있다. 특히 이 글은 전통 동아시아 철학이 21세기에 바람직한 윤리로서 제대로 연구되고 이해되기 위해서는, 정치적으로 평등의 이념과 도덕적으로 자유라는 방향을 그 지향점으로 수용할 때 현대적 삶에 걸맞는 윤리 체계 혹은 윤리에 대한 학으로 정립될 필요성이 있다는 점을 지적하고자 했다.
Abstract
In the 19th and 20th centuries, traditional East Asian disciplines were forced to adopt Western methods and frameworks. Confucianism, in particular, sought to transform itself into a Western discipline that would fall under the category of philosophy, especially ethics. In practice, however, it has tended to be consumed as a kind of the ‘getting on in the world.’ This article is a response to these questions. In particular, this article tries to point out that in order for traditional East Asian philosophy to be properly studied and understood as a desirable ethics in the 21st century, it needs to be established as an ethical system or a study of ethics that is appropriate for modern life when it accepts the ideology of political equality and the direction of moral freedom as its orientation.
