Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the Korean language learning experiences and identity of Korean Studies students in Europe through narrative inquiry. For this purpose, this study, which regards the learner as a social entity from the viewpoint that the language learning process is fundamentally social, is based on Bakhtin's Dialogism. This study confirmed that language learning is an 'identity work' as well as a process of 'ideological becoming.' In both the Netherlands and Korea, the experience of Korean language learning and use was a process of reconstructing identity beyond the accumulation of linguistic knowledge or the acquisition of communication skills. The process of identity reconstruction had three characteristics: relational, emotional, and dynamic. The participant's experience was essentially a relational process with the existence of the 'other.' The emotional eager for belonging and recognition was closely related to the investment of Korean learning. Also, the reconstruction of identity in language learning experience was not only dynamic & gradual, but also an unfinalized process. In addition, the identity of participant was multi-faceted and even contradictory according to an interlocutor. This paper emphasizes language learning as an identity work, and challenges the existing view, which regards communication skills as the top priority in language learning, suggesting critical approach towards interculturality.
