Abstract
This article aims to study Zimbabwe with a focus on the sanctions from the West against this country and its leaning on China. To fulfill the aim, this article reviews the Zimbabwe’s relationship with China before its independence and the background and essence of the sanctions imposed by the Western countries, such as ‘ZIDERA’ of the US and the ‘targeted sanctions’ of the EU against Zimbabwe. In addition, this article analyzes Zimbabwe’s ‘Look East Policy’ implemented after the imposition of the sanctions and how and why Zimbabwe’s leaning on China was accelerated. This review and analysis demonstrates that the sanctions and Zimbabwe’s leaning on China is co-related and the historical ties between Zimbabwe and China was an element strengthening this co-relation. This article implies that when a country which has a political and historical closeness with China faces the deterioration in its relationship with the West, it is probable that the country tries to find a breakthrough through strengthening its relationship with China, as Zimbabawean case proves.
