Abstract
Zanzibar City is composed of two contrasting spaces: Stone Town and Ng'ambo. Historically, Stone Town was a trading post for Persian, Omani and Indian traders who intermingled with the local African population to create a unique creolised civilization. In contrast, Ng'ambo served as a bed town for Africans and began as a place to house the labor and slaves that parasitized Stone Town. The Zanzibar Revolution of 1964 served as a political turning point that upended this configuration. The revolutionary government sought to erase Ng'ambo’s historical shadow and spurred the development of a socialist modern city. Although the new city was only half successful, Ng'ambo has since continued to expand its boundary, absorbing disparate races and ethnic groups, and becoming an archetypal example of the creolisation of Swahili identity. Ng'ambo is a space that exemplifies Swahili identity. In Ng'ambo, Zanzibar natives coexist with migrants from neighbouring Pemba Island, mainland Tanzania, Oman, Yemen, India and the Comoros, among other Indian Ocean spaces. This coexistence is a natural and ongoing process of interaction, negotiation and unity in Swahili. This creolisation does not arise from differences between the disparate races and ethnicities of Ng'ambo occupying exclusive territories, but from the recognition and negotiation of escartes within the inclusive identity of Zanzibar Swahili. This paper traces the process of Swahiliisation by interpreting the results of fieldwork conducted in Ng'ambo. The inclusive identity of Swahili is analyzed in terms of the social relations of Ng'ambo, which are linked by various social ties. Among these ties, Ujamaa (familism), Udugu (neighbour to neighbour), and Umma (cohesion among Muslims) are identified as important social mechanisms that determine Swahili identity and continue to function today.
