Abstract

]This essay focuses on music and poet in ancient China. In ancient China, music was a multiple activity, including dancing, singing, and musical performance. It was indispensable for Chinese Literati to understand and quote a music and a poet (from the Book of Odes) in their private and public activity, for example in their society, in their court, and even in diplomatic circles, etc. Proper quotation from the Book of Odes became an indicator of ability of Literati in pre-Qin(秦) China. So much emphasis was placed on the musical and poetic education in literati culture. Confucius was a typical literati who was at home not only in music and poet, but also in shaman and history.
