Abstract
The sage Confucius (B.C. 551-479), K'ung-fu-tzu 孔夫子 or K'ung-tsu 孔子 in Chinese, has been known as China's most famous philosopher, teacher, and political theorist whose ideas have influenced the East Asian civilizations including Korea and Japan. Confucian ritual music in Korea (aak 雅樂 in Korean, ya-yüeh in Chinese), one of state sacrificial rites of Chosŏn dynasty 朝鮮王朝 (1392-1910), is well known but it is unknown that Confucius was an important musician. The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to demonstrate the fact that Confucius was an important musician on the basis of Chinese literary sources such as Shih-chi ꡔ史記ꡕ by Szu-ma Ts'ien 司馬遷, Chou-li ꡔ周禮ꡕ, Lun-yü ꡔ論語ꡕ, Li-chi ꡔ禮記ꡕ, and so on. After examining various source materials of the Chinese literatures, the author observed that Confucius was not only ch'in 琴 player and a music critic, but also he is believed to have been the compiler of Shih-ching ꡔ詩經ꡕ. It is also pointed out that Confucius composed such repertories as Hsi-tsou-ts'ao 息陬操, Kuei-shan-ts'ao 龜山操, and I-lan -ts'ao 猗蘭操.
