초록

From the moment of his arrival in Japan to the moment of his arrest, Father Rodrigues suffers continual conflict between his former faith and ever-deepening doubt. Twice witnessing Christians dying for their faith, Rodrigues feels frustrated as a Father. Most painful for him is that during the turmoil of persecution, God never speaks or rescues His Church. His strong faith gradually falters, and he occasionally doubts God’s presence. Finally, Rodrigues tramples Jesus' face and completes his act of betrayal. He says, however, that he did it for his suffering flock, but never denied his Lord. Rodrigues concludes his belief has undergone drastic transformation and that his Jesus can hardly be the same as the one of Whom the Church teaches. From the humanist perspective, Rodrigues' argument seems convincing and invites readers’ sympathy. His self-serving argument, however, challenges church teaching, begging the question as to the authenticity of Jesus' advice to him, and positing a radical concept of Jesus that Rodrigues later accepts. Deciding if Rodrigues' act of betrayal contributes to his spiritual maturity is controversial because his argument clashes with traditional theological doctrine. Each reader is then left to decide which side to take.
