Abstract

This paper examines the methods of interrogation and persecution depicted in Silence, presenting historical evidence from sources such as the Kiristoki and conducting a comparative analysis with historical facts. First, the authorities encouraged the denunciation of Catholic priests and Kirishitan affiliates through monetary rewards. Those who were Kirishitan themselves but betrayed others were exempted from punishment and received equal rewards, promoting internal betrayal and division. This is confirmed in Nagasaki’s official edicts recorded in the Kiristoki, and reflected in Silence through Kichijirō’s betrayal. Second, rather than resorting immediately to torture or execution, the authorities prioritized inducing apostasy through direct interrogation and psychological tactics. This marked a policy shift led by Inoue Chikugo-no-kami, as documented in the Kiristoki, and is vividly portrayed in the treatment of Rodrigues after his capture in Silence. Third, apostate priests were given Japanese names, forced to marry, and placed in Edo’s Kobinata district—specifically, the “Kirishitan-Yashiki,” a prison-like residence under constant surveillance. These priests were used as propaganda tools to undermine the faith of other believers. The persecution methods depicted in Silence are firmly based on historical fact. Recognizing that these sophisticated, psychologically driven methods were historically grounded deepens the thematic impact of the novel for readers.
