초록
This paper explores to understand Socio-cultural status of Chushi(處士) in Tang China. It is very usual to find a word Chushi on the inscriptions of the Tang period. Originally Chushi means an idealized type of the scholars who intentionally rejected to serve as the officials. In contrast, the deceased who was depicted as Chushi on the inscriptions cannot be the same as identical kind of Chushi. In these inscriptions, Chushi just meant a person who was not an official. They were proud of descendants of noble lineage and showed off eminent choronym what is so-called JunWang(郡望). It’s a clear contradiction in contrast with ideal image of Chushi. A number of them were tried to reveal the record of their ancestor’s office titles in detail. But the majority of office title names were a kind of honorary. Moreover, the grade of their ancestor’s office titles tended to fall down, actual office titles were below 6th grade which cannot give their descendants the privileges. These facts manifest that Chushi was not different from common scholars who wished to enter bureaucratic world. Chushi was a sort of literary title for the deceased. The title of Chushi in Tang China implies the efforts of the deceased to boost their social and cultural position by identifying themselves as an idealized scholar. Therefore it is not surprising to encounter the word Chushi so many times on the inscriptions.
