Abstract
This paper is an intertextual study between the stories of Jephthah (“Judges 11”) and Saul (“1 Samuel 14”) focused on their literary aspects. Both are similar in their structure, storyline, and theme. There are three groups of characters in both stories and each in the same order: father, his child, and their community. The two fathers both lead in battle, and perform their social function for the safety of their communities. They made an unexpected oath at the price of a human life, which was calculated to guarantee their success. Unfortunately, the children become the victim of each father’s oath. After examining the motivation and characteristics of the fathers’ oath, this research will take a close look at each group’s reaction to one another (i.e. a father’s response to his child, child’s response to his/her father, community’s response to their child and the leader). This research pays close attention to the communities, which mediate between both fathers and their children through support of the children and criticism of the fathers. My research methodology will be a close reading of the narrator’s descriptions in each scene within a contextual understanding. This analysis of each story and comparison of the three groups (father, child, and community) in both stories will enrich our insights of both stories’ literary features.
