초록

Abstract: This article investigates one of Matthew Arnold’s early poems “The Buried Life” (1852) to explore the speaker’s manifold perceptions of bereavement in spiritual and religious values among Victorian inhabitants. It argues that Arnold associates the recognitions of loss with the protagonist’s resilient pursuit of liberating from such a crisis and instability of selfhood. Arnold highlights the significance of questing disregarded human values like mutual affection and the underlying source of life, thereby reigniting a lost pulse of passion for human solidarity and religious sensibility. This progress of revitalizing the neglected vitality enables people to reestablish mental and moral identities about themselves. With this regard, the poem anticipates the writer’s later poetry and prose works where he reworks loss and liberation motifs in formulating fundamental issues of cultural and literary domains.
