초록
From the literary point of view the story of Moses in the Bible can be read as an epic or a tragedy. However the protagonist Moses in this story has lots of characteristics of the hero which we can find in the traditional heroic narrative. As in many ancient cultures, Moses' nativity is threatened and he must be hidden from danger. This is one of the elements of the life of the typical hero. He also experiences the ceremony of initiation through which the typical hero advances from a common man to a great hero. His experience of withdrawal is another element that makes him a true hero, who should be singled out when he receives inspiration from above. The moment of inspiration for Moses is a theophany, that is, the meeting with God at the burning bush. It is this event that changes the course of Moses' life for hero and the fate of his people. The next heroic trait I find in Moses is a negative quality which is said as anti-heroic. Unlike heros in traditional literature he shows lack of confidence and courage when God orders him to deliver his people from the bondage of Pharaoh. Whereas literature emphasizes the greatness of human qualities and talents, the Bible stresses the greatness of God's power and providence. Moses is only used as God's instrument to fulfill God's providence for the people of Israel. But, in spite of the negative qualities, he must be a true great hero from the human level because he is a figure who represents a cause larger than himself. At times he acts as an agent of the Lord, a prophet serving as intermediary between the divine and the human. Other times he represents his people, Israel itself. Moreover he has the strong responsibility, patience and great love for his people. He also acquires an air of mystery, of otherness, a awesome, lonely quality like the typical heroes. However, what is the most important in making him a true great hero is that God himself verifies Moses is a great hero who is set apart from the other people.
