18세기 대구 사대부의 일상을 통해 본 가족과 관계-최흥원(1705~1786)의 사례-

Abstract

This study contemplates the meanings of family in the daily life of Choi Heung-won (1705~1786) who lived in Daegu in the 18th century. In the study, discussions focus on two points. The first point is space as it was an important element in a person's way of thinking and action. The study examines the characteristics of Daegu in the 18th century when Choi lived there. The provincial office of Gyeongsang Province was set up in Daegu in 1601. The governor would have controlled the entire province, including its administration and judicial power. Thus, Daegu became the central city of the province in administration and jurisdiction. Gyeongsang Province was the most populous administrative unit at the provincial level in Joseon in the 18th century, and Daegu was at its center. The second discussion point is family, which is a foundational group of life. The scope of family, in a narrow sense, encompasses a couple and their children, and in a broader sense, even their parents and siblings. Accordingly, one must know the description of family. The present study sheds light on the family relationships of Sadaebu in the 18th century with the case of Choi's family, whose perceptions of family and roles were reviewed based on their words and actions to each other. Choi's family consisted of a couple and their children. They lived together, and the couple shared responsibility for their children's upbringing and education. As a father, Choi was particularly devoted to the upbringing and education of his children. He taught his son everything from daily habits to interpersonal behavior styles. It was the same with his daughter. He would postpone an urgent matter to prevent her from getting hurt emotionally and even feel sorry after spending days at the house of his married daughter. The study also examines the couple's relationships with their parents and siblings. Their parents and siblings lived in separate places and worked together to serve their parents. Choi was the eldest son and lived with his mother after his father passed away early. Choi's wife also passed away early. Under these circumstances, he lived with his mother. His siblings lived in their respective homes after getting married. He and his siblings divided their roles to serve their parents.
